Church representatives meet Penang chief minister, 27 April 2010

PENANG, Malaysia (UCAN) — About 400 leaders and representatives of all Catholic parishes, Protestant Churches and Christian bodies in Penang state met state Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and other government officials for a dialogue luncheon on 26 April.

“The purpose of this dialogue is to touch base with the churches in Penang so that there is open communication between us,” says a statement from the Chief Minister’s office.

Church sources say meetings between state government officials and Church representatives became more often starting early this year, after the “Allah” issue blew up across the nation.

During the recent dialogue, the biggest this year, Christian leaders brought up issues among others concerns about acquiring land for churches and Christian cemeteries.

Catholic Bishop Antony Selvanayagam of Penang said on the sidelines: “It is a good effort of the Chief Minister to call all Christians together. At least the (state) government is listening to us.”
