Home Ministry hauls up Nanyang over 'Allah' logo, 28 December 2011
The chief editor of Nanyang Siangpau was today summoned by the Home Ministry over the use of the world ‘Allah’ as a logo in two reports published by the daily.
In a statement late this evening, the ministry’s deputy chief secretary (security) Abdul Rahim Mohd Radzi said this was in contravention of Section 7 (1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.
“Nanyang Siangpau has been issued a show cause letter over the publication of the world ‘Allah’ in its newspaper.
“This is because this involves Muslim sensitivities and may cause tension and confusion among the public,” Rahim said.
The two articles that featured the logo are titled ‘Hudud law becomes a controversial issue’, published yesterday, and ‘Hudud law a concern to non-Muslims’, published today.
“The Home Ministry will take stern action against any newspaper that flouts the law in the future based on provisions in the Act,” Rahim added.
