PETALING JAYA (Oct 2, 2011): HUA Zong (Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia) president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah has expressed regret over certain quarters’ challenge to the prime minister to approve the implementation of the hudud (Islamic criminal laws) in some states, Sin Chew Daily reported today.
“We understand the feelings and views of the Muslims on the matter, but we want to stress that Malaysia is a multi-religious and multi-racial country, and that the feelings and views of non-Muslims should also be given equal treatment to truly reflect a religion’s fair treatment of and love for all mankind,” he said.
He welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s promise that the federal government would definitely reject any attempt to implement hudud in the country.
Speaking at an anniversary celebration of the Kuantan Dou Mu Gong Temple cum Nine Emperor Gods celebration in Kuantan on Saturday evening, Pheng said the non-Muslim community had over the years faced numerous issues related to Islam, including custody disputes arising from divorces between Muslims and non-Muslims.
He said these issues led to controversies, discords and feuds, which if not handled carefully, could affect inter-religious harmony.
He said the federation hoped that the government would clear up some grey areas regarding these issues based on the current situation.
Pheng also expressed his gratitude towards the government for recognising the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism.
He said the setting up of the cabinet’s special committee to promote inter-religious harmony and understanding last year showed the government’s recognition of, support and respect for, and openness towards various religions in the country under the “1Malaysia” concept.
He hoped that the related private and governmental bodies would create an even more moderate, rational and inclusive communication channel, or even legal platform, to resolve various religious issues through negotiations, to further enhance inter-faith understanding and harmony.
> Wife's weird demands chase away "bride"
THE weird demands of a barren woman scared off three Vietnamese brides taken by her tycoon husband to extend the family lineage, China Press reported today.
The report said the 60-year-old Singaporean had his wife’s consent to take a Vietnamese bride to bear him children but the demands of his 50-something wife, including her insistence that she be present each time he makes love to the mistress, put them off one after another.
Marcus Lim, who runs a Vietnamese Brides Agency in Singapore, said the couple sought his assistance three times, the last being several months ago.
He said the tycoon took his first and second Vietnamese brides several years ago but life as a “trio” lasted no more than two weeks on both occasions.
“Not long ago, I introduced a 25-year-old Vietnamese woman to the tycoon. But she ditched him three months later.”
Lim later learnt that the tycoon’s possessive wife had set strange rules the bride found hard to comply with.
The tycoon’s wife determined when the “mistress” could make love to the tycoon and insisted that she be present when they do.
“The wife also kept the mistress’ passport, forbade her from making phone calls, and rarely allowed her to be alone with the tycoon,” said Lim.
He said the Vietnamese bride ran away as she was under a lot of pressure, and was fearful that she would be kicked out of the house and have the child taken away from her once she became a mum.
Lim said he had suggested that the tycoon buy a house to keep the “mistress” but tycoon objected, saying that was not his wife’s wish.
