Curb greed, seek the sacred, Archbishop tells Japan’s future leaders
The world must re-examine ‘what has passed for rationality’ in habits of production and consumption, the Archbishop of Canterbury told an audience at Rikkyo Gaukin University in Tokyo this week. Dr Rowan Williams warned of environmental and financial ‘catastrophe’ unless societies rein in their greed. The financial crisis had triggered an enquiry about ‘what kinds of behaviour are life-giving and sustainable’ and some recognition ‘that they need … the sacred in their lives,’ he said. The Archbishop was at the start of a week-long visit marking 150 years of the Anglican Church in Japan. On Wednesday, he spoke to over 2,000 people at Tokyo’s Roman Catholic Cathedral and urged Japan’s Christians to display qualities of simplicity, risk and solidarity.
