Why still no action on Al-Islam and its reporters?, 13 August 2009
by Dr Jacob George

Prime Minister Najib Razak is on record that serious action will be taken on those who offends any religion or religious practices in the country.
One of the penal sanctions which may be considered in this matter is the law applying to sedition.
Of late, I see many individuals been hauled up for allegedly insulting religion without first ascertaining the facts.
I'm wondering what ever happened to the police report filed by Joachim Francis Xavier on the actions of monthly Malay-language Al-Islam magazine.
Its reporters pretended to be Christians, participated in a Christian service and Eucharist, then spat out the holy Eucharist, photographed it and filed the story?
Their action caused much distress and hurt the religious sensitivities of Christians. Is not their behaviour deserving of the highest punishment, or they above the law?
What if the actions were reversed? Would there have not be demonstrations and such as has happened in Kedah, Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan years ago?
Norshamsinor Baharin, the assistant editor of Al-Islam is reported to have stated that he did not want to make any statements on the matter. He did not even apologise. No action was taken.
Thus far only Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin has issued a statement for which I'm deeply moved.
Najib Razak must walk his talk and ensure fairness is applied across the board for the sake of peace and goodwill of the nation.
Otherwise his 1Malaysia policy is suspect.
